Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices ACT you have many rights. The FDCPA is a law the controls how debt collectors may or may not conduct themselves.
Under the FDCPA you may exercise your right to communicate "Cease and Desist" to the third party collector. That is you wish to cut all lines of communication with the collection agency. You should send the letter certified mail so you can prove you sent it. After receipt of the letter the collector may contact you once more to let you know what they plan to do with the account. They may terminate the account and send it to an attorney, or they might take another action. They might not communicate with you at all.
